About Brian Thurmond

“A fusion of his dirty southern roots and classic French training, 148 North hopes to be a community gathering space that does for Collierville what his Great Uncle Paul did for his street in Mississippi.”

When the most important thing to an 11 year old is making sure he doesn’t miss an episode of Good Eats, he might pursue cooking as a career. This is the situation with Brian Thurmond. Born and raised in the University area in Memphis, he would constantly beg his mother to get in the kitchen to cook. From brewing his own beer to perfecting chocolate chip cookies, Brian enjoyed anything to do with making something edible and sharing it with others. One of the most important relationships Brian had was with his Great Uncle Paul, who was known to pull a 12-foot smoker to family functions and make enough food to feed everyone on the street in his small Mississippi town. This showed how important cooking is to gathering people together to share their lives with each other.

It wasn’t until a fateful meeting with a then unknown chef from New Orleans, Kelly English, that helped put the wheels in motion. In May 2008 Brian began washing dishes at Kelly’s newly opened Restaurant Iris. With encouragement from Kelly and a blessing from his now wife Hannah, Brian started studying at L’École Culinaire. In 2011, having worked his way up to leading the line, Kelly named Brian the chef de cuisine of Restaurant Iris. Allowing him to take over a majority of the day-to-day operations of the kitchen, Brian gradually began planning the menu.

In January 2015, Kelly was approached with an upcoming availability on the Collierville town square and decided it would be the perfect space for Brian to go out on his own. So once again with the encouragement of Kelly and blessing from his wife Hannah, 148 North was born. A fusion of his dirty southern roots and classic French training, 148 North hopes to be a community gathering space that does for Collierville what his Great Uncle Paul did for his street in Mississippi.

Brian has lived in Collierville for the past six years with his wife Hannah and his rambunctious two year old, Adelaide Mae; and new addition Caroline Dell. A proud transplant to the community, he is looking forward to being heavily involved in Main Street Collierville and the surrounding community.
